Movie review: Parasite (기생충)

Yes, finally I tried to give this movie a shot. After all those reviews I read (even before they won FOUR awards in Oscars), I just finished watching it yesterday and I loved it. Unique and unpredictable storyline are the winning points of the movie combined with brilliant casts and actings. Hence, I will write this review from my point of view as a person who has been given the spoiler to the details by my friend lol

The story starts with Ki Taek (played by Song Kangho), the head of four-member family, living in a basement with his wife Chungsook, son Kiwoo, and daughter Kijeong. Four of them are jobless and try to do everything to make ends meet. One day, Kiwoo's friend, Minhyuk, comes to his house and tells him to take over his job as a tutor in the wealthy Park family since he will go abroad to continue his study. Previously, Kiwoo has taken university entrance exams for four times but he failed to pass all of them. With his sister's help, they fraud the university certificate to make him convincing enough as a university student with the alias 'Kevin'. With his knowledge, he successfully convinces Mrs Park to allow him teaching their daughter. After a few meetings, the daughter falls in love with so-called Kevin. He also observes that their younger son is hyperactive and unsociable but he loves art; Kevin recommends his sister Kijeong to Mrs Park to teach him art but this time Kijeong acts as a world-class art therapist 'Jessica'. One day, Jessica finishes class late and Mrs Park tells her driver to take Jessica home, but she purposedly left her underwear in the backseat and trapped him so that he would be fired. All the plans go well and this time their father Ki Taek acts as the new driver for Mr Park, posing as a driver with tons of experience driving Benz. Not satisfied enough with the situation, they trap the head of the household assistant saying she has a TB infection, coughing blood the whole time where actually she has pear allergy and they put pear powder all over her body to make her coughing and sneezing. The assistant gets fired and now their mother Chungsook is the new house assistant. One day, Park family wants to go camping to fulfil their son's wish and it's supposed to be a 2D1N trip. Ki Taek and his family stay in the house as if they are the owner, eating everything inside the fridge and drinking beer, enjoying the hot bathtub to the fullest. The plan goes on smoothly until someone unpredictably knocks the door and it turns out to be the old house assistant. This is when everything starts to go wrong. She wants to take her belonging left in the basement since last time she didnt have the time to pack it. It takes a lot of time; Chungsook is curious what's left in the basement, and she is surprised to see her trying to open a secret door behind wine rack. The secret behind the door is something you'll never think of, and even if I already knew beforehand about it, I still surprised at how the writer can think about this idea. The rest is what you should watch by yourself (or else it would be too much spoiler). The main leads are all experienced actors and actress in Korean movie industry; their actings are on point!! Song Kangho is a regular award-winning actor and Im happy for him that he gets even bigger recognizition now. His acting is top notch, as an unemployed man yet a loving father, protecting his family till the end. The siblings are annoying at first, but you can see how they love and take care of each other. The way they smoothly prepared for the family member to work in the house one by one is also another plus point of this movie. Parasite is said to be inspired based on true story of Christine and Lea Papin, two French sisters and live-in maids who were convicted of murdering their employer's wife and daughter in early 20th century. If you enjoy Korean movies like I do, this one is highly recommended and you need to watch it to know why they deserve all the Oscars. Kudos to the director Bong Joonho and the Parasite team!
Rate: 8.5/10
